Biography:

Tim Speedle was born and raised in suburban Jamaica Queens, New York. His father owned a chain of family restaurants, a position that offered Tim a financially secure and also well-fed childhood. His Mother, a volunteer with Social Services, devoted her life to helping less fortunate children in the community. Growing up with all manner of neglected, abandoned and abused children instilled a driving sense of compassion in him for people caught in circumstances beyond their control.

Tim had a younger brother, who is 13 years younger than him, with whom he never developed a close relationship, preferring to keep to himself.

During those hours spent alone, Tim read voraciously. There wasn't a subject that did not interest him, but the one section of the school library where he read every book was the sciences. It was there he met his one and only best friend. Together they led their high school's science team to the State Championship four years in a row.

Months before graduating, his best friend was paralyzed from the neck down in a snowmobile accident while on their high school senior trip. Their plans of going to Europe and then college together dissolved in that one night. Swearing he would do everything he could for his friend, Speed went to Columbia University and devoted himself to studying the biology of paralysis (His Thesis: "Molecular mechanisms of neuronal differentiation, axon guidance, and cell recognition in vertebrate development").

He was top of his class. But, two years later, his friend died from complications during surgery. As far as Tim was concerned, nothing mattered any more. He dropped out of school and disappeared.

His family didn't hear from him until almost a year later when he called from his best friends uncle's house in Miami. He had wandered in and landed there, and "No, he still didn't know what do with his life", and didn't know until he started following his friend's uncle to work at the Miami-Dade Crime Lab. With the same focus he had in school, he consumed everything he could about the work that was done in the crime lab. It was here he met Megan Donner. Megan took him under her wing and Tim quickly realized that this was the work he needed to do.

He returned to Columbia, finished his honors degree in one year, and took an official internship at the Miami-Dade Crime Lab under Donner's tutelage. Six months later, he was working as a full-time CSI.

Cause of death:
Tim Speedle was shot and killed in the line of duty during an investigation which started with a boat ramming into the support of a bridge, this then turned into a kidnapping and for Tim ended when the evidence led them to a jeweler suspected of foul play. Ryan Wolfe (Jonathan Togo) later took his place on the CSI team.

Personal demons:
Tim was deeply affected by his best friend's death, and it was what led him into becoming the man he was. His lack of care for his professional tools and equipment cost him his life when his gun jammed during a Jewelery store heist because he'd failed to keep it properly maintained.

Defining Cases (or Episodes):

Season 1: "Dispo Day": His service weapon misfired, and he was shot, non-fatally, while wearing a kevlar vest.
Season 2:"Wannabe": Tim forms a tentative bond with a geeky CSI enthusiast who later killed himself. We see a softer side to him in this episode. We also saw Tim struggle to remain a CSI because he didn't think he could make a difference.
Season 3 : "Lost Son": Tim was haunted by poor gun maintenance, which came back to ultimately end his life when a situation at a jeweler's turned dangerous.
Season 6 : "Bang Bang, Your Debt": Tim comes back as a hallucination to Eric and helps him find a piece of evidence.

Tim has a deadly habit of neglecting to keep his gun well-maintained. (Fact: Rory spoke out against this.)
