The Quotable Caine: "Here we go."
"Are you telling me there's a green light on me?"
Episode Recap: Show begins with a tour of a cathedral, the afternoon sun coming through the stained-glass window. Horatio is sitting in a confessional talking with the Cardinal from NY (his former location) discussing a past "sin". The Cardinal reminds H that he'll know when he's done enough to make penance for what happened so long ago. The scene changes to outside the cathedral to the cemetery where a funeral is taking place. An unmarked police car is coming down the path with a prisoner inside. The MDPD officer and the prisoner get out and we learn that it's the prisoner's mother who has passed. The prisoner asks the officer to remove the handcuffs but the officer says, "You know I can't do that." The prisoner attacks the officer, unlocks and removes the handcuffs, and starts running towards the casket saying, "Madre, Madre" (mother, mother). All of a sudden, the prisoner stops and stares as he sees the casket opening. A man sits up and fires off a machine gun. Horatio, still inside with the Cardinal, hears the gunfire and interrupts the Cardinal's prayers saying, "Father, I...have to go." Back outside, there's mass chaos; the gunman is randomly killing people in the crowd as well as the prisoner. The officer, using the headstones for protection, tries to shoot the gunman. The man gets out of the casket and screams at someone in a hearse, and you can hear it fire up and then it starts to roll backwards to pick up the masked man. As he runs toward the hearse, he fires again at the police officer, this time hitting him. The man jumps in the hearse and then you hear the sound of a handgun being cocked and H comes into view in kind of a fast slow-motion. H fires 7 or 8 times, hitting the hearse a couple of times, with one shot hitting the gas tank. H holsters his weapon and checks on the officer, but it's too late. He uses his radio though to apprise dispatch of the situation and request backup.
Horatio: "Frank."
Tripp: "Guy jumps out of a casket and shoots Alberto Fuentes here...Had to be some sort of a switch." Horatio: "Send a detective unit to the mortuary, please."
Eric, Calleigh, and Wolfe arrive on scene, with H and Tripp discussing the particulars while Alexx examines the body of the prisoner. Alexx opens up Alberto's shirt to reveal a pitchfork tattoo, the trademark tattoo of the Mala Noche, the most notorious gang in Miami. H asked what Alberto was in prison for and Tripp said "according to a relative it was for cocaine distribution," but the Mala Noche have a rule that specifically forbids members to traffic narcotics. So H says that it was his own gang that killed him. H asks Tripp what it costs to get an escort guard for a family funeral, to which Tripp replies, "10K in a cashier's check." Horatio says to find out who ponied up the $$ for Alberto; Tripp walks away promising to check with the prison and get back to H. In the background, you see Calleigh, Eric and Ryan walking up behind H as he says, "The FBI considers the Mala Noche the most dangerous crime organization in the United States, ladies and gentlemen. They stay away from drugs to avoid deportation, but what they specialize in is murder-for-hire, extortion, the list goes on. In short, they are Miami's new Mafia...Now, I must tell you, they've already killed 6 police officers (Wolfe interrupts: You tryin' to scare us, Horatio?") Born in the Nicaraguan wars, they have no fear, so anyone not interested, I'll understand." Calleigh: "we're in if you're in." H smiles and says, "Ok, good."
H: "Eric, the hearse."
Eric: "It's a tank. Probably halfway up 95 by now."
H: "Check the road, I may have hit it."
Eric: "Okay."
H: "Oh, uh, I forgot. Welcome back."
Calleigh comments on the firepower and the fact that they were obviously using automatic weapons. Erica (the news girl) tromps through the crime scene trying to get a "quote" but Ryan quickly threatens to arrest her if she doesn't get "behind the tape." Tripp comes up behind H with a Star Island address for the benefactor of the escort guard. H: "What a nice address, Frank."
H and Tripp interrupt a blonde's sunbathing to ask her if she knew Alberto - H drops a picture of Alberto's body on the table beside her, tells her he was shot and killed this morning at his mother's funeral, a funeral she didn't attend - and she said that they had broken up when he went on the inside, but that the $$ was a favor. H said "a favor to who? Alberto or the man that killed him?" The girl quickly gets huffy and says "If you think I set him up..." To which Tripp replied, "If you think getting passed around by a bunch of criminals is gonna get you street cred with your richy-rich friends, well guess again, cuz right now you're an accomplice to murder." Girl kinda mulls that over for a sec and H pulls his glasses off and says, "I wanna know who the shooter is..." Girl stumbles and says "I don't know his real name, he went by Diablo" H asks when she last heard from Diablo and she said she'd been trying to reach him all morning but he wasn't answering. H tells her to call him when Diablo calls her.
Calleigh and Eric work together to figure out a search radius for the hearse. The computer gives them a 5-mile radius; Calleigh says she'll let dispatch know to put out a broadcast on 2 men armed and extremely dangerous and Eric says he'll let H know. H, Eric, and Tripp approach a house with weapons drawn, and find a woman beaten, bleeding, and scared - she's the housekeeper and tells H that the guys took the family's car. Tripp, Eric, and H discover that the family was hiding in their panic room and the housekeeper refuses any examination because she doesn't want to risk losing her baby. The panic room opens and the family comes out - only semiconcerned about Celia's welfare. H informs Mr Livingston that he now provides medical insurance for his employees - he is paying for Celia's hospital stay. As Calleigh is processing the house, she finds some trace on a rug. She drops it in a test tube, adds a liquid, and determines that it's some sort of alkali that was most likely on the bottom of the suspects' shoes. Tripp asks if it'll help find where they've been hanging out; Calleigh says "it's a start..." Eric visits Alexx in the morgue - she has Alberto's mom's body; it had just been dumped in the back of the mortuary. It turns out Ms Fuentes had a pacemaker and based on the info Alexx downloaded from it, the woman suffered a heart attack due to extreme stress.
Eric: "Extreme stress or extreme fear?"
Alexx: "I don't know, Eric, could a MalaNoche scare you to death?"
Eric: "Question is how can we prove that? What's that mark on her cheek?"
Alexx: "I don't know; it's antemortem. It's like an impression of something."
Eric: "Lord only knows what they did to her. Look, I'm gonna be at this woman's house; see what I can find."
When he gets there, he eventually finds a grenade under her chair - the likely trigger for her fatal heart attack. Delko finds a print on the handle of the grenade and is a perfect match for Rafael Sifuentes. Calleigh and Wolfe get to see the new lab for the 1st time and get to meet Natalia Boa Vista (Eva LaRue), a new DNA analyst for unsolved cases. Wolfe goes to the A/V lab and sees Erica plastering his face across the screen.
Dan: "You're on TV." (footage from the crime scene plays. Wolfe says: "Mafia, my ass. If you ask me, these guys are a bunch of cowards...shot a bunch of innocent people attending a funeral...")
Wolfe: "She just won't stop."
Dan: "You know that girl? She's hot."
Wolfe: (receiving a page) "She's a case against the 1st Amendment."
Dan: (sees Wolfe checking his phone) "Goin' to give her hell?"
Wolfe: "H is a rush."
He retrieves Celia's sheets from the hospital where the EMT bagged her gurney sheets and promises H that he will carry them straight back to DNA; H has to inform Celia that the baby is gone and learns that Mr Livingston was the father of the child.
Peters (trace guy): "I ran the sample from your home invasion...(Calleigh: "Great.")...Calcium carbonate, Calcium hydroxide, and Magnesium."
Calleigh: "Limestone. Fantastic. South Florida is covered in it."
Peters: "This is processed limestone with a bonus. Magnesium."
Calleigh: "Will you put that in context?"
Peters: "Magnesium is added to reduce the acidity of sulfur dioxide emissions from power stations."
Calleigh: "So we're looking for a limestone mine with a processing plant."
Peters: "May not be as difficult as it sounds. These places are open 24/7."
Calleigh: " Well, that does narrow the thing down. No gang is gonna hang out at a busy plant...an abandoned mine on the edge of the 'Glades. Horatio, I think we may have just found the location of the MalaNoche's hideout."
Police/SWAT storm the place and find Rafael there.
H: "So, Rafael, you and your buddies shot up the cemetery and then broke into the Livingston house, didn't you?
Rafael: "You got some good story, there, B."
H: "So do you. (To the SWAT officers) Take him outside."
Outside, H tells Eric to do a "full process" on him; Eric comments on Rafael's tattoos and H asks Rafael to confirm that he is indeed MalaNoche and Rafael proudly boasts of his gang's exploits. H reminds him that he brutally raped a woman and killed the child she was carrying;
Rafael replied "yo i was you, i'd worry about my own neck."
H: "Is that a fact?"
Rafael: "Yeah, if I was you, Lieutenant Caine."
H: "Rafael; are you telling me there's a green light on me?"
Rafael: "Approved by the bosses straight from Nicaragua. You AND your lab are the first real trouble we've had here in Miami, and we don't like trouble."
H sees Rafael look off in the distance and then hears birds flutter and he knows something's not right. He yells @ Eric to take cover as the 1st shots are fired. SWAT starts firing back but the gunmen are never found.
Rafael: "You're never gonna win this war."
H: "That's what you think."
Ryan is standing at Reception waiting for Erica, who is all smiles that he'd left her a message. He, however, is furious. He drags her down a corridor and starts yelling at her.
Wolfe: "This isn't some Boy Scout troop you're investigating. This gang is lethal."
Erica; "They don't scare me."
Ryan: "Well, they scare me, and they already put out a green light on my boss."
Erica: "A green light?"
Ryan: "It's a hit. These guys...they're gonna kill anyone that gets in their way."
Erica: "You wouldn't have asked me to bring my recorder unless you wanted to put all this on tape." Ryan: (shaking his head) "Erica, you know me so well..."
Erica: "You wanna redo that last part, about the hit?"
Ryan: "Sure." (takes her recorder and smashes it on the floor) "C'mon. (he pushes her back on the elevator) Lose my name, lose my number, I don't ever wanna hear from you again. Got that?"
Eric checks in with Valera, who informs him that Rafael's DNA does not match the DNA for Celia's attacker, but the sample from the coffin did match. H can't figure out why the MalaNoche are hiding at the quarry. Frank tells H that Calleigh is inside checking things out, and H says that when she finds something to let him know, that he would be on the ridge.
Frank asks what the MalaNoche were packing up as he picks up a brand new, still in the package lead-composite putter. Calleigh reminds him it's evidence, Frank puts it down with the comment, "it wouldn't help my game anyway." Calleigh queries the reasoning behind repackaging something brand new that wouldn't normally need repackaging. Tripp continues digging through crates and comes across a film bag, which he opens and finds a black canister. Tripp questions her about why would they smuggle black canisters and Calleigh mentions the grenade that Eric had found at Mrs. Fuentes' house and that grenades are usually shipped in canisters like that. Tripp notices that all the canisters there are empty and wonders where all the grenades are. He leans over, picks something off the floor, shows it to Calleigh, who says it's from the original shipping crate. The name on the label is none other than Mr. Livingston - the home invasion "victim." Frank and H have Mr Livingston at MDPD in an interrogation room, where they confront him with their knowledge of his involvement with the MalaNoche in smuggling grenades with the clubs because the lead in the clubs would disguise the lead grenade canisters. Livingston claimed he was forced to, that he never wanted any part of those guys. He was also forced to open an account at Coral Gables Bank, where alot of money had been deposited in return for his part of the smuggling deal. The crates would be doctored at his South American manufacturer and then be shipped here, and then liberate their stuff at the quarry and then return his merchandise to him. Diablo beats Mr Livingston pretty badly with one of his clubs and threatens him, and it was after that that he built the panic room - the one, as H reminds him, he didn't let Celia in. To which Mr Livingston says "just one of the mistakes I've made in her regard." H says, "Yes, I'm aware of all of the mistakes you've made with her, Dale." H questions him further on the details of the shipments and learns that Wednesday was the "hot" day and that was also Celia's day off, so she shouldn't have been there when the invasion happened. H goes to the hospital to find out why Celia was there on her day off and learns that INS asked Celia to listen in on Mr Livingston's phone calls and report what she found out back to them, because they couldn't get taps on him, But she would be a good citizen if she did that for them. H tracks down an INS agent and rakes her over the coals for putting this woman in danger. The INS agent said they had to use a CI (confidential informant), that the MalaNoche was a dangerous threat. H tells Agent Maxwell that Celia had been raped and assaulted, to which she replies, "we've been trying to get the Noches on smuggling grenades into Florida for months...we know Diablo sets up the infrastructure for this..." H figures out that they don't have enough for a warrant, so they use Celia to get the intel needed to get the warrant to go after Mr Livingston, take the Noches down and collar the "lynchpin," Diablo. INS doesn't know who or where Diablo is; they were depending on H for that, and H says, "I think I hear your elevator..."
H visits Valera in the DNA lab to check on some results. He welcomes her back and then its straight to business. H comments that rape has the highest rate of recidivism (returning to crime habits) and Boa Vista asks if he thinks his suspect might be in her unsolveds. He asks her to use the sample found on Celia's gurney sheets and go back as far as her grant would allow. H and Stettler exchange tense words about a trip Stettler made to NY. H goes inside to find that Natalia found that the sample matches a rape from a year ago, and the rapist is Benito Gallian, aka Diablo. The previous attack happened at the Star Island blonde's (Michelle) house. She admits the rape charges are false, that she was seeing Benito a year ago and her dad walked in on her with Benito. H asks her to tell him where the MalaNoche are, and he doesn't want her to lie to him. She swears she doesn't know, that he's supposed to send for her after some big meeting, and H urgently asks if he called it a universal, but she doesn't know; she said all he called it was a big meeting. H tells Frank the MalaNoche have called for a universal; the leaders will all meet at one location, but no one knows where yet. Frank goes off to set the ball in motion to find out where. H asks Wolfe to get help from Erica. They make up and Wolfe convinces her to let him borrow her parabolic mic in the A/V lab where Dan isolates the shooters' voices and learn that there will be something going down at the pier. H beeps his phone and requests to be connected with SWAT as he darts out the door. They get to the pier and H asks one of the guys where Diablo is and he says, "Diablo never showed; he had to see some chica." Wolfe said, "well he's in for a surprise, 'cause we've got his little rich girlfriend in custody." The guy snickers and Wolfe asks "what're you smilin at?" and H says, "that's not the woman he's after." Diablo, dressed as a doctor, slips into Celia's bay while she's sleeping and starts choking her, but H rushes in and pulls him off her. H throws Diablo to the floor and draws his gun. He tells Diablo to get up, and as he does, he pulls a scalpel out of the coat pocket. H says, "If I were you, I'd put that down. Diablo, do not advance. This is your last chance, do not make me do this." Diablo moves to advance on H and H pulls the trigger lightning fast; Diablo drops to the floor. Blood is pooling under Diablo's head. H asks Celia if she's ok, and she says she is and asks if its wrong to thank him, and H tells her that what matters now is that he will never hurt her again. Celia figures H has been in that same situation before. He tells her she has no idea...
H kneels down and dips 2 fingers in Benito's blood.
MalaNoche men are loaded onto Miami-Dade Corrections bus with Delko and Tripp watching.
Horatio goes back to church and Stettler is on his heels...
Body count: 2
Victim(s): Alberto Fuentes, Mrs Fuentes, MDPD officer
Suspect(s): Rafael Sifuentes, Benito Gallian aka Diablo
Whodunit: Diablo
Path of evidence:
Personnel issues: none except for Ryan and Erika Sykes, the news girl
From the field: Ryan cuts part of the lining of the casket where the gunman hid; Calleigh finds some kind of alkali when she was looking over the Livingston house for evidence from the break-in; Celia's sheets from the gurney; crates of golf clubs (putters) hiding lead-lined canisters for smuggling grenades
From the morgue: Alberto's mother had a pacemaker which revealed that she experienced either extreme stress or fear to trigger the attack
From the lab: DNA from casket matches semen taken from Celia, which also matched a prior rape; led them to Diablo's real name.
