Episode Recap: This episode begins on a yacht caught on a sandbar off the coast of Miami. A family of four is trapped on board; the water is filled with sharks. Ken Gannon, the father and pilot of the yacht, tries to free the yacht from the sandbar. His wife, Laura, and two children, Julie and Luke, are panicking. Julie disregards her dad's order to wait for help and jumps overboard, where she is set on by sharks. Luke jumps in to save her, but neither of the teens resurface.

Later, as Eric Delko searches the ocean for the bodies of the two teenagers, he comes across a young man's body in the water. He locates it almost exactly where the body of Luke Gannon was projected to be. The CSIs pull the body from the water and turn it over to Alex. The Gannons come to identify the body, but they can't. It isn't Luke.

Eric discovers that the channel marker that should have been warning people of the sand bar had been moved, and told H he suspected that a "salvage" boat captain would have good reason to move it. Later on, Horatio meets a salvage captain, and thinks he may have had something to do with the boat wreck where two of the Gannons allegedly died.

Back at the morgue, Alex removes the body's fingers so that they can be printed and identify the John Doe.The young man is identified as Damon Laughlin, a visitor with a student visa. He was house sitting for Julio Elias, a wealthy member of the same yacht club as the Gannons. Calleigh and Ryan go to visit Elias, and discover a blood stain in the foyer. They declare the home a crime scene, and send the Eliases through with an officer to identify what was missing. Elias tells the CSIs that he had ten million dollars worth of gold bars, and they are missing.

Horatio revisits the salvage trawler's captain, and discovers that he has a large amount of gold bars hidden on his boat. He asks where the captain got them, and Luke Gannon appears. He tells H that he gave the captain salvage rights over the Gannons' yacht after the captain saved his life. The CSIs determine that the gold was stolen from the home of Luke's ex-girlfriend and her father. Luke denies any wrongdoing.

At the crime scene, Calleigh and Ryan discover a shell casing from the same caliber weapon that killed Damon Laughlin. There appears to be trace on the casing, and they rush it back to the lab. The DNA is matched to Luke Gannon. However, when the CSIs run the DNA, they get a big surprise: Luke and Julie Gannon are not brother and sister. They are not related to each other, or to their "father." Laura Gannon is astonished by this news. Her first husband died in a car crash, and she met Ken not long after that. The kids were his, she explained, and they all quickly became a family.

Eric goes over the car that Laura's husband died in, and discovers it's been tampered with. A switch attached to the cruise control made the driver lose control and hit the wall, killing him instantly. Eric pries apart the device and the tape around the wires, and finds a fingerprint in the fold of the electrical tape. The fingerprint is Ken Gannon's.

Luke is arrested for the murder of Damon Laughlin, and Ken Gannon is arrested for the murder of Laura's first husband. The three con artists conspired to kill Laura's first husband so that they could get access to the yacht club, and Julio Elias's house and gold.
